Se p 19 98 Ion Signatures in Supernova Spectra
نویسندگان
چکیده
Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT A systematic survey of ions that could be responsible for features in the optical spectra of supernovae is carried out. Six different compositions that could be encountered in supernovae are considered. For each composition, the LTE optical depth of one of the strongest optical lines of each ion is plotted against temperature. For each ion that can realistically be considered as a candidate to produce identifiable features in supernova spectra, a sample synthetic spectrum is displayed. The optical depth plots and the synthetic spectra can provide guidance to studies of line identifications in the optical spectra of all types of supernovae during their photospheric phases.

We use early-time observations of He I 10830Å to measure the extent of upward mixing of radioactive material in SN 1987A. This work develops and extends the work of Graham (1988), and places constraints on actual explosion models. The presence of the He I 10830Å (2s 3 S–2p 3 P) line at ≥ 10 days post-explosion implies re-ionisation by γ-rays from upwardly-mixed radioactive material produced dur...

We examine the prospects for using lead as a supernova-neutrino detector by considering the spectrum of electrons produced, and the number of oneand two-neutron events. We show that the electron energy spectrum from charged-current reactions can be used to extract information about the high-temperature component of the neutrino spectrum. Some degree of electron neutrino oscillation is expected ...

We present broad-band and spectropolarimetry of the Type Ia SN 1996X obtained on April 14, 1996 (UT), and broad-band polarimetry of SN 1996X on May 22, 1996 (UT), when the supernova was about a week before and 4 weeks after optical maximum, respectively. The Stokes parameters derived from the broad-band polarimetry are consistent with zero polarization. The spectropolarimetry, however, shows br...
متن کاملNeutrinos from Stellar Collapse: Comparison of signatures in water and heavy water detectors
Signatures of neutrino and antineutrino signals from stellar collapse in heavy water detectors are contrasted with those in water detectors. The effects of mixing, especially due to the highly dense matter in the supernova core, are studied. The mixing parameters used are those sets allowed by current understanding of available neutrino data: from solar, atmospheric and laboratory neutrino expe...
متن کاملSe p 19 98 Hydrogen atom moving across a strong magnetic field : analytical approximations
Analytical approximations are constructed for binding energies, quantum-mechanical sizes and oscillator strengths of main radiative transitions of hydrogen atoms arbitrarily moving in magnetic fields ∼ 10 12 − 10 13 G. Examples of using the obtained approximations for determination of maximum transverse velocity of an atom and for evaluation of absorption spectra in magnetic neutron star atmosp...
